How to Calculate Quilt Binding

Quilt binding starts with the quilt perimeter. Add the width and length, multiply by two, then add extra length for joining the binding ends.

For many quilts, 10 to 12 extra inches is a practical planning amount. Divide the total binding length by WOF, or width of fabric, to estimate the number of strips.

To estimate yardage, multiply strip count by strip width, then divide by 36. Many quilters use 2.5 inch strips for double-fold binding.
