Binding estimate

Cut 7 WOF strips and buy about 0.5 yards.

Quilt perimeter
264"
Binding length needed
276"
WOF strips needed
7 strips
Estimated yardage
0.5 yards

Most quilters add 10-12 extra inches for joining binding ends.

Formula

Binding length = 2 × (quilt width + quilt length) + extra joining length. Strip count = binding length ÷ WOF. Yardage = strip count × strip width ÷ 36.

Example calculation

A 60" × 72" quilt has a 264" perimeter. Add 12" for joining, then divide by 42" WOF to estimate the number of strips.

Results are planning estimates. Always round up when buying fabric, especially for directional prints, shrinkage, fussy cutting, or cutting mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

What does WOF mean?

WOF means width of fabric. For quilting cotton, it is often around 42 to 44 inches.

How wide should quilt binding strips be?

Many quilters use 2.5 inch strips for double-fold binding, though 2.25 inch strips are also common.

How much extra binding should I add?

Adding 10 to 12 extra inches usually gives enough room to join binding ends comfortably.

Does this work for bias binding?

This calculator estimates straight-grain WOF strips. Bias binding may require a different cutting plan.
