Standard Cal King Quilt Measurements

A California king mattress is 72 by 84 inches. Every quilt measurement for this bed comes out of those two numbers, and the first thing they produce is a shape most quilters do not expect: a quilt wider than it is long.

California King Quilt Measurements by Drop

Drop is the distance the quilt hangs below the top of the mattress. Width gets it twice, once on each side. Length gets it once, at the foot. Five combinations of those two numbers cover nearly every quilt made for this bed.

VariationWidth × LengthSide dropFoot drop
Coverlet92" × 94"10"10"
Square96" × 96"12"12"
Standard102" × 100"15"16"
Pillow tuck102" × 112"15"28"
Deep drop108" × 102"18"18"

The coverlet row suits a 12 inch mattress where the quilt stops just under the rail. The deep drop row is as wide as a king quilt, on a bed 4 inches narrower.

The 12 Inch Drop That Makes a Square Quilt

Width is 72 plus twice the drop. Length is 84 plus the drop. Those two lines cross exactly once: 72 + 24 = 96 and 84 + 12 = 96. At a 12 inch drop, a California king quilt is 96 by 96 and dead square.

Above 12 inches the sides pull ahead, because a side drop is counted twice and a foot drop only once. The standard 15 inch drop lands on 102 by 100, wider than it is long by 2 inches. Below 12 inches the opposite happens and the quilt runs head to foot. Want a square? Build the top at 96 by 96.

Reading the 100 by 112 Charts

Search for California king quilt measurements and you will meet 100 by 112, 104 by 112, and 105 by 105 beside the 102 by 100 used here. Each one decodes once you subtract the mattress.

The 112 inch length is 84 plus 28. That 28 is a 16 inch foot drop with a 12 inch pillow tuck folded over the top, so charts printing 112 assume the quilt turns back. The 105 by 105 figure picked a square first and worked backward, which yields 16.5 inches of side drop and 21 at the foot. Nobody measures a bed that way.

From Measurement to Cut List

Backing and batting are cut 4 inches larger on every side, so the working rule is measurement plus 8. That rule settles something more useful than yardage: a 108 inch wide backing bolt covers any quilt up to 100 inches wide. The standard California king sits 2 inches past that line.

96" × 96"104" × 104"8.75 yd3 yd
102" × 100"110" × 108"9 yd3.25 yd + seam

Three panels of 42 inch fabric give 126 inches and trim down; two give 84 and cover nothing here, not even the 100 inch coverlet cut. Past a 100 inch quilt width the wide bolt needs a strip from a second length.

If you take one set of numbers off this page, take the standard row. Top 102 by 100, backing and batting 110 by 108, and 11 binding strips at 2.5 inches.

Measuring the Bed You Actually Own

California king mattresses are not all 84 inches long, and the top surface is the number that matters. Measure it, then add the drop you want. A 12 inch mattress with 3 inches of visible overhang needs 15 inches of drop; a 14 inch pillow top needs 17.

Check both long sides too. A mattress that reads 72.5 at the head and 71.5 at the foot will pull a square quilt crooked, and that half inch is worth finding before you cut 9 yards of backing. Send the finished figure to the quilt size calculator and it returns top, backing, and binding in one pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the standard California king quilt measurements?

102 inches wide by 100 inches long. A California king mattress is 72 by 84 inches, so the quilt carries 15 inches of drop on each side and 16 inches at the foot.

What side drop does a California king quilt need?

Fifteen inches per side is the working standard, which is a 12 inch mattress plus 3 inches of overhang. A 10 inch drop stops above the rail on that mattress, and 18 inches reaches the frame on a deep one.

Why do California king quilt charts disagree by a foot?

Length is where they split. The 112 inch figures are 84 plus a 16 inch foot drop and a 12 inch pillow tuck. The 100 inch figures leave the pillows bare. Width moves with drop, from 100 inches at a 14 inch drop to 108 inches at 18.

Is a California king quilt bigger than a king quilt?

Narrower, not bigger. The standard California king quilt measures 102 by 100 inches against 108 by 108 for a king. The bed itself is 4 inches longer and 4 inches narrower, and the quilt follows the mattress.
