Lap Quilt Size Guide
A lap quilt is the project most quilters make between big bed quilts, and it is the one size nobody agrees on. This lap quilt size guide uses the numbers quilt charts and batting packages rely on, then carries them through to the fabric you have to buy.
What Size Is a Standard Lap Quilt?
A standard lap quilt measures 50 inches wide by 65 inches long. That figure is not derived from a mattress. It comes from a seated adult: a chair about 32 inches wide with roughly 9 inches of quilt draping down each side, and 65 inches running from the top of the backrest, over the lap, and past the knees.
The useful range runs from 36 by 48 inches up to 55 by 70 inches. Below 36 inches square a quilt stops covering the legs as soon as the person shifts, and past 60 by 72 inches it is a couch throw rather than a lap quilt.
Lap Quilts Compared with Throws and Twins
One is cut for somebody sitting up; the other for somebody lying down.
| Size | Finished | Sized for | Batting precut that fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small lap | 45" × 45" | A child sitting up | Throw 60" × 60" |
| Standard lap | 50" × 65" | An adult in a chair | Twin 72" × 90" |
| Throw | 50" × 60" | One adult lying down | Twin 72" × 90" |
| Large throw | 60" × 72" | Sharing a sofa | Twin 72" × 90" |
| Twin quilt | 70" × 90" | A 38" × 75" mattress | Queen 90" × 108" |
Fabric Plan for a 50 by 65 Lap Quilt
A 50 by 65 top finishes at 3,250 square inches, which is roughly three yards in simple patchwork and four to five yards in a block design.
| Item | How it is figured | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Top, 5" squares | 130 squares cut 5.5"; 19 WOF strips | 3 yd |
| Top, block pattern | Count blocks, then add 20 percent | 4–5 yd |
| Backing, pieced 42" | 2 panels of 42" × 73" = 146" | 4.25 yd |
| Backing, 108" wide | One piece, 73" off the roll | 2.25 yd |
| Batting | Cut 58" × 73", or trim a twin precut | 2.25 yd |
| Binding, 2.5" strips | Perimeter 230" + 24" = 254"; 7 strips | 0.5 yd |
The top figure explains the rest. A 10 by 13 grid of 5-inch finished squares covers 50 by 65 exactly, and a 40-inch usable width fits seven 5.5-inch squares per strip, so 19 strips is 104.5 inches — just under three yards.
How the 50 by 65 Rectangle Is Built
The width is the easy half. Measure the outside of the chair and add 9 inches per side: 32 + 18 = 50. Wide rolled arms need 12 inches per side and finish at 56 inches.
The length is measured on the person. Start at the top of the backrest, run the tape over the seat, and stop where the quilt should end — mid-shin on most adults. A typical armchair reads 25 inches of backrest, 21 inches of seat, and 19 inches of front drop: 25 + 21 + 19 = 65 inches. Add 10 to 15 inches if the quilt also has to cover your feet in a recliner.
The Batting and Backing Traps
The first trap is batting. A 50 by 65 top needs a 58 by 73 inch cut at 4 inches of overage per side, but the precut sold as a throw is usually 60 by 60 inches — 13 inches short, which forces a pieced strip through the middle of the quilt. Buy the 72 by 90 inch twin precut and trim it, or cut 2.25 yards from a roll.
The second trap is backing width. A 58-inch back needs two panels of 42-inch cotton, and at 73 inches long that is 146 inches of fabric, or 4.25 yards — not the 2.25 yards a single-panel guess suggests.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a standard lap quilt?
50 inches wide by 65 inches long. The useful range runs from about 36 by 48 inches at the small end to 55 by 70 inches at the generous end.
How much fabric do I need for a 50 by 65 lap quilt?
About 3 yards for a 5-inch square patchwork top, 4.25 yards of 42-inch cotton for a pieced back or 2.25 yards of 108-inch wide backing, a 58 by 73 inch batting cut, and half a yard of binding.
Is a lap quilt the same as a throw quilt?
No. A 50 by 65 inch lap quilt is cut for an adult sitting up, while a 50 by 60 inch throw is cut for someone stretched out on a sofa.
What batting size fits a 50 by 65 lap quilt?
A 58 by 73 inch cut. The common 60 by 60 inch throw precut is 13 inches too short, so buy a twin 72 by 90 inch precut and trim it, or cut 2.25 yards from a roll.
