Fat Quarter vs. Quarter Yard
Both a fat quarter and a quarter yard contain the same total fabric area, but the shape is very different. Quilters often prefer fat quarters for their versatility.
Quarter Yard
A quarter yard is cut straight across the bolt. From 44-inch wide fabric, a quarter yard measures 9 inches by 44 inches. This long strip is useful for borders and bindings but limited for patchwork.
Fat Quarter
A fat quarter is cut differently. The fabric is first cut in half lengthwise to create a half-yard piece approximately 18 inches by 44 inches. That piece is then cut in half widthwise, giving you 18 inches by 22 inches.
Why Quilters Prefer Fat Quarters
The 18" × 22" shape gives you a much wider piece of fabric to work with. You can cut larger squares, wider strips, and more useful patchwork pieces than you could from a long 9-inch strip.
